Dell xps 13 7390 Positioning
Positioning on the Dell XPS 7390 2-in-1 is the easiest. This is a business laptop for those who want the very best. And this is not flattery, but an objective fact.
This Dell xps 13 7390 laptop is more likely not even for middle managers, but for top managers. For those who consume content, rather than create it (although the performance of a laptop is enough for any task, the 13.4-inch screen still imposes certain restrictions).
And given the compact size and lightweight, the representative of the target audience either works a lot outside the office, or simply does not like to carry heavy objects.
The laptop comes in a beautifully opening black stylish box.
Dell xps 13 7390 Appearance
Top cover: aluminum, Dell logo
Bottom cover: aluminum, XPS logo, speakers, ventilation, rubber feet
Right side: USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 with PD + DisplayPort, 3.5 mm jack
Left side: USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 with PD + DisplayPort, microSD card reader
The laptop seems very small. Looking at it, it’s hard to believe that the screen is 13.4 inches. And I’m used to various laptops, but the dimensions of the XPS 13 7390 are still very impressive. I can’t wrap my head around how something so tiny can be so powerful. The dissonance is so strong that for the first couple of days I experienced some kind of irritation.
Brushed aluminum that resists fingerprints
The Dell xps 13 7390 laptop is made of brushed aluminium. Minimum decorative elements. On the top cover is the Dell logo, and on the bottom is the XPS inscription. By the way, I really liked that instead of traditional legs, the XPS has two rubber strips. They perform their functions perfectly, the laptop does not slip even on inclined surfaces.
Figuratively carved XPS lettering and DELL logo on the top cover. Laconic branding
The laptop has a minimal but thoughtful set of ports – 2 USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3, there is a 3.5 mm jack and a microSD slot.
I wanted to find fault with the fact that there is not a single traditional obsolete USB Type-A, but, rummaging through the box, I found an adapter. But still, in my opinion, it would be better if there was one regular USB Type-A to insert flash drives. Well, or what do you think? Write your opinion in the comments. Dell says USB Type-A would make the laptop fatter.
The XPS 13 7390 laptop has an excellent balance, you can easily open it with your hand, even if at that moment you are trying to shoot video on your smartphone.
On the inner surface of the coating of carbon fiber. It is pleasant to touch. The manufacturer says the coating is UV and stain resistant. I confirm the latter. There are no hand marks left.
The Dell laptop has a standard weight for its category – 1.3 kg. And the compact size allows you to squeeze the device into any bag. Given that this is a Dell 7390 2 in 1 device, this means that the laptop folds into a tablet.
Dell xps 13 7390 Screen and Webcam
Two screen options are available: Full HD+ or 4K Ultra HD+. The first option has a standard 100% sRGB color gamut, while 4K+ has 90% DCI-P3. I had a screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels on the test. In my opinion, the optimal solution for these sizes.
Dell xps 13 7390 The Main Facts about the Screen
- The screen has very thin bezels, thanks to which 13.4 inches could fit into a 12-inch case.
- Color gamut 100% sRGB. In general, it is. The color meter showed slightly higher results towards green.
- Claimed brightness of Dell xps 13 7390 is 500 nits. It is important to say here that this is a significant brightness. More than most ultrabooks. I even got 530 nits when measuring. This brightness means you can work comfortably in any light. Even on a sunny day, sitting on a park bench.
- Minimum brightness 25 nits. If you also turn on the night mode (without blue light), then it is quite comfortable to work in complete darkness.
- The screen of Dell xps 13 7390 laptop is HDR 400 certified. The number 400 means that the display brightness is definitely at least 400 nits.
- The laptop is claimed to have a screen protector against dirt. As far as I can tell, fingerprints are less noticeable and are erased, one has only to wipe with a cloth.
- The touch screen is good. This is Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5. You can draw with all your fingers. You can and even should buy a stylus for a laptop. But even without it, you can quite accurately underline, highlight and draw on the screen.
- The description of the webcam says widescreen 720p. Typical quality. Premium in the webcam is not felt. I am surprised at this fact, but the quality of webcams is practically the same for cheap and expensive laptops of all manufacturers.
Write in the comments how often you use a webcam, whether its quality is important to you. For example, I use a webcam only in Skype and mostly on a smartphone, just for the reason that the camera is lame in a laptop.
Dell xps 13 7390 Keyboard and Touchpad
The Dell xps 13 7390 laptop has a full-size magnetic keyboard with a travel depth of 1.3 mm. First, I would like to praise Dell for separate arrow keys and separate PgUp and PgDn buttons. But Home, End and Print Screen are combined with F-keys.
Dell key travel depth 1.3 mm. The same depth, for example, in the new MacBook Pro 16. Of course, this is better than the stroke of the butterfly keys (0.5 mm). Fingers do not get tired when typing. This is a matter of taste, but I enjoy typing on such a keyboard.
In the upper right corner is a black button without symbols. This is the power button, combined with a fingerprint scanner. I have no complaints about the work of the latter: it clearly and quickly lets into the system.
The Dell xps 13 7390 laptop has a glass touchpad that supports the Microsoft Precision Touchpad driver. The touchpad size is 11.3 x 6.8. This is slightly more than the standard 10.5 by 6.5.
Dell xps 13 7390 Performance
In the past, ultrabooks seemed to be one of the most boring varieties of laptops. And in theory, the whole review boiled down to three things: battery life, whether it is convenient to print and look at the screen. However, the release of the 10th generation of processors from Intel breathed new life into this category, turning ultrabooks from typewriters into full-fledged computers.
The main feature is the updated graphics, which is now quite enough even for demanding games. And if you are now in search of a new laptop, then be sure to take the 10th generation option. However, even here there are some difficulties. Different processors have different performance for integrated Intel Iris Plus graphics. Graphics power is indicated at the end of the processor name. For example, the graphics of the i7-1065G7 test sample are G7, the most powerful. There is also G4 – this is also Iris Plus, but weaker, and there is G1 – this is boring Intel UHD graphics. You don’t need to buy it.
So, G7 is a graphics that allows you to play even games like Assassin’s Creed Origin, but at the minimum settings (768p). However, given the screen size, this is not too upsetting. You can also play Rise of the Tomb Raider, also getting 30-35 fps.
In any case, such performance will help brighten up a boring business trip. You can safely play WoT on medium settings.
Great results on medium settings
The laptop Dell 7390 has a fast SSD, the disadvantage of which is that it cannot be replaced. The speeds are very good.
The xps 13 7390 laptop also performed well in the extended PcMark 10 test. The updated graphics allow you to output video from Adobe Premiere even with minimal pain.
It should be clarified here that in the usual PCMark 10 test, the laptop “knocks out” 4,427 points. And in the extended one, where the game component is also tested, – 3,414.
Dell xps 13 7390 Battery Life
The laptop has a 51Wh battery.
Comes with a mini 45W charger. The charging tip lights up. For charging, you can use any of the Type-C ports.
On the front end there is a light strip, which, when filled, shows the charging process. It’s comfortable. Even if the laptop is turned off, you can roughly estimate how much it is charged.
Battery life can be characterized by the words “working day”. Here, of course, it is important to note that Windows has different performance modes. For example, in the “battery saving” mode and at the maximum brightness available in this mode, the laptop can play video for almost 13 hours. If you watch Netflix (via the application via Wi-Fi), then the operating time will be 12 hours and 40 minutes.
In Internet browser mode in economy mode at maximum brightness, the operating time will be 8-9 hours, depending on the browser. Chrome is extremely gluttonous. Better install the Microsoft version of Chrome if you want to work for a long time.
If you run a “heavy” game (respectively, the maximum performance mode) such as Tomb Raider, the operating time will be 2 hours and 5 minutes.
Conclusion and Impressions of Dell xps 13 7390
This is a premium device for a significant amount of money, so it cannot disappoint. The laptop is designed to please its owner, even in small things. For example, the XPS 13 7390 has a zest that the laptop itself turns on, it is worth lifting the lid.
Another nice feature is the lack of heat. Under load, the upper part becomes warm, but the lower part, where the hands rest, remains cold. Thus, the heating of the device is imperceptible.
The Dell 7390 remains quiet most of the time. Under maximum load, the operation of the cooling system is audible. But you can’t call a laptop noisy. There is no feeling that a little more, and take off. The noise level is approximately 45 dB.
Looking at the performance of the device, I would like to say that the XPS 13 7390 is in some cases cooler than the MacBook Pro, while being smaller in size than the MacBook Air.
Windows has a new shutdown option. You press the button, then you swipe across the screen. It is comfortable.
Dell xps 13 7390 Competitors
There are always a lot of competitors in the ultrabook category, as this is one of the fastest growing segments of the PC market. Of course, 13-inch MacBooks should be included among the competitors. But this is not about the current, but about the future generation, since Apple still releases laptops on obsolete 8th generation processors.
For the price, the current MacBook Pro 13 is comparable to the Dell XPS 13 7390. Of course, they do not have any touch screens. The only benefit is if you’re a macOS fan rather than Windows.
A clear competitor is HP Dragonfly. It weighs just 999 grams and has a richer assortment of ports, including USB Type-A and HDMI. There is an infrared Windows Hello camera. The only and most significant minus is the 8th generation of processors from Intel. These are great processors that have proven to be reliable, but the 10th generation takes devices to the next level with powerful integrated graphics.
And, of course, there are many competitors from Lenovo, but they are all on the 8th generation of processors from Intel, such as the ThinkPad X1. If you are a fan of the Lenovo brand, then you’d better wait until the company introduces updated models.
